Patrick Mahomes made a big statement after his Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Miami Dolphins 21-14 in Germany on Sunday.

“I think it’s the best defense in the NFL,” Mahomes said of his team’s defense. “If we have a defense like that, we’re going to figure out this offense, I promise you.” We’re going to be a difficult squad to beat.”

Deebo Samuel, a 49ers receiver, responded to the remarks on Tuesday’s “Up & Adams Show.”

“Suit yourself, man,” Samuel advised the show’s host, Kay Adams. “I think everyone is going to think they have the best offense and defense in the league.” Why would you not? I’m going to repeat myself. I’m going to claim we have the best offense and defense in the league.”

During the team’s bye week, the 49ers’ defense added defensive end Chase Young in a trade with the Washington Commanders. Young should help the 49ers’ underperforming defensive line, which has only 18 sacks in eight games, ranking them 24th in the league.

“It should be very interesting adding this young fellow to the team who is playing at a high level,” he remarked. “He’s in good health.” We’ll see what we’ve got.”

San Francisco’s roster is deep, particularly on defense. Young was previously drafted second overall. Nick Bosa is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, while Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw are perhaps the best linebacker duo in the league.

The roster’s talent is why Samuel and the 49ers’ confidence hasn’t wavered despite the team’s current three-game losing run.

“I don’t think [confidence] has decreased,” Samuel told Adams. “At the end of the day, we know our limits.” We got off to a fast start, but then struck some speed bumps. That is unavoidable. You’re not going to win all of them. You simply need to do it step by step and prepare in the same manner as we have.

“A big emphasis on takeaways and staying on the field and sustaining drives – just getting back to what we’re doing.”

Samuel and the 49ers have a chance to win again against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Samuel is expected to play at TIAA Bank Field after missing San Francisco’s final two games before the bye week.
