Linebacker Fred Warner hopes defensive tackle Javon Hargrave plays as well as he did in last season’s NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Of course, unlike last season, Warner is pulling for Hargrave’s success this time around.

“I’m glad he’s on our side and not their side this time,” Warner said of Hargrave, according to The Mercury News’ Cam Inman. “He’s been so consistent for us in terms of causing disruption on our defensive line up there in the middle.” It’s been crucial to what we do.”

After three seasons in Philadelphia, Hargrave signed a four-year, $84 million contract with the 49ers this offseason. His influence was immediate. Only the Chicago Bears allow fewer running yards per game than the Niners, and Hargrave has six this season.

It’s frightening for opponents to consider, but Hargrave might improve even more following the acclimation process that comes with joining a new team. The former Eagle feels he is finally at ease in his new surroundings.

“I think I’ve got it now, more so of knowing my plays and what we’re trying to do,” he said of his new colleagues, including fellow defensive tackle Arik Armstead.

Eagles prep for old friend

No one knows what kind of game-breaker Hargrave can be better than his former employer, who earned the rewards of an 11-sack season in 2022 before Hargrave went free.
