Ryan will never see the field if Ji’Ayir Brown performs well. However, if Brown struggles, Ryan might step in and take his position.

This year may be the 49ers’ greatest shot to win a Super Bowl, therefore they cannot afford to take chances on young players who may not be ready for the playoffs.

So the 49ers signed veteran defensive back Logan Ryan this week, who appears to be just a fill-in for the stretch run. However, he is assisting rookie safety Ji’Ayir Brown, who is filling in for All Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga, who is sidelined for the season due to a ruptured ACL.

Ryan will never see the field if Brown performs well. However, if Brown struggles, Ryan might step in and take his position.

I asked defensive coordinator Steve Wilks about Ryan and Brown on Thursday. Wilks stated the following:

ME: What does S Logan Ryan add to your defense?

“A lot of experience, two Super Bowls, and a wealth of knowledge where he can communicate and talk to these young guys, especially on the backend,” WILKS says. And then simply recognizing that he’s entering a culture that he’s probably not used to. These men know how to get the job done. Every day, they go about their work in a different way. So, with him coming in, I believe it will be a simple and easy transition for him.”

ME: What have you seen from Ji’Ayir Brown as a full-time starter?

Steve Wilks States reasons San Francisco 49ers signs

WILKS::I like the word assurance. He exudes confidence. I like how he communicates and talks. He’s taken the initiative to be that outspoken man back there. We often say that when the formation is speaking to you, you must listen with your eyes. It’s telling you something. He’s talking and verbalizing it with the players out there, which allows him to play fast and be in position to make plays.”
