Discussions concerning whether Brock Purdy is a worthy MVP candidate are rarely substantive and frequently come off as phony. We’re not taking notice of how Purdy has improved an offense.

If you’ve been following this blog, you are aware that we wanted to watch Purdy continue where he left off from the previous season, which is why we took our time crowning him. To be honest, the 23-year-old did so really quickly. Purdy has contributed to making the most of this offense by utilizing the full field and throwing the ball deep.

He has kept the offense on the field by using his legs and mobility, usually out of need. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan clarified that Purdy’s most valuable quality isn’t physical:

“Well, I believe that’s something he does rather naturally. I believe that Brock possesses a talent that is difficult to evaluate. I believe that eyesight and related matters go beyond simple questions like “Is he 20/20?” There are several kinds of vision, such as looking outside, coming in broad, or merely words I’m not familiar with. However, how your eyes perceive things matters a lot.

In my opinion, Brock is able to identify objects, their speeds, and their levels. He also has an understanding of the defenders’ positions and how best to defend them. However, there seems to constantly be a growth. “Yeah, this play is going to go here,” yet that man might not perform his duties. You must thus sense that if he does his duties, we will move on to the next level.

That is his typical behavior. Brock went to number one, which wasn’t on the video, but he didn’t give a damn since there was a quick person in the slot, so you had to give it to him. Brock noticed that he hesitated for a moment. The nicest part about him is that he kind of sees things and reacts rather than memorizing and guessing.

Shanahan went on and gave the following example to highlight what Purdy is doing::

“Everything is the way it is. There’s always going to be a progression, but you could call it a play where this guy is leading the progression but he’s never open in the coverage they play. Hence, as you can see, he is covered, indicating that number two is available. You can’t go back to number one, though, if you receive that coverage and jump straight to number two, where he is covered. You must thus confirm information. If I were to play quarterback there, for example,

I wouldn’t be aware of anything happening. I used to attempt to program beforehand and memorize coverages, saying things like, “Okay, I think it’s this. Let me go to number three.” After then, you’re duped, and when you attempt to regain the top spot, you either end up throwing picks or getting fired. Thus, it’s keeping an eye on things while continuing to play the game and attempting to avoid becoming overtaken by coach talk, video, and other distractions. You must read stuff, respond, and keep your pocket open. It is quite difficult to play the position because of this.

Even if Shanahan was not aware that he was taking jabs at a former quarterback, it might or might not have been. Brock enters a play and yields to the defense’s instructions. On the other hand, some people might plan their actions ahead of time depending on the play-call.

Finally, here’s Shanahan talking about the difference between Purdy and Matt Ryan

Indeed, reps help everyone grow better. Compared to the first year, Matt was undoubtedly much more at ease in the second year. However, I believe that Matt faced a greater challenge because, by the time I arrived in his eighth year, he had already played for six different coordinators. Thus, he thinks about football far more than before. You go through things, and Brock had a really clear start. Brock simply followed the offense, picked things up quickly, reacted appropriately, and played the way he always does. When you engage in numerous scams before meeting someone, things are different.

It appears that Purdy’s ability to absorb various NFL offenses at once has helped him develop into a sponge under Shanahan.
