One topic of discussion in the MVP competition is Brock Purdy.

Although San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been mentioned as a potential NFL MVP, not all previous MVPs agree.

In a recent podcast, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who won MVP in 2015, referred to Purdy as a game manager. Despite leading the Panthers to a 15-1 record in 2015, Newton and the club lost to the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium.

“Brock, he’s not the reason they’re winning,” Newton remarked. He is in charge of the game. These guys are game managers: Purdy, Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, and Dak Prescott.

“They don’t make a difference,” Newton went on. They don’t always need to score. Additionally, they are not required to toss a pick each time. A game manager and a game changer are not the same thing, if we are to be truly honest.

In addition to 3,837 passing yards for 35 touchdowns against 10 interceptions and 636 rushing yards for 10 touchdowns, Newton was the game-changer in 2015. With four games left, Purdy already has 3,553 yards throwing for 25 touchdowns against seven interceptions and 138 yards for two scores.

This season, Tagovailoa, Prescott, and Goff are all in the top six for passing yards, ahead of both Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes. Prior to the game manager’s remarks, Newton praised Mahomes and Jackson.

The Baltimore Ravens (10-3) have been winning with Jackson at less than 100%, while the Kansas City Chiefs (8-5) have been losing recently. The Cowboys (10-3) defeated the Eagles (10-3) but were hammered by the 49ers earlier in the season. The Detroit Lions (9-4) recently lost to the Chicago Bears (5-8).
