Though he is unable to properly repay running back Christian McCaffrey for his Christmas gift of new golf clubs, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy still feels grateful.

“Yes, I did receive new golf clubs. I required a few. Yes, please acknowledge Christian, Purdy said to reporters on Friday. “Spoke out to him, but financially I wouldn’t be able to cover it right now [laughs]. It was a hit with everyone, so yeah. Christian, thank you.

The 49ers signed Purdy to a four-year, $3.73 million contract after he was chosen as the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. This season, he will earn $870,000, a pittance compared to the top players in the league.

Neither San Francisco nor the rest of the NFL predicted Purdy’s rise in advance. In less than two years, Purdy went from being Mr. Irrelevant to an MVP contender.

With 69.8% of his passes completed for 3,795 yards and 29 touchdowns against seven interceptions, he led the 49ers to an 11-3 start. A major factor in Purdy’s success has been McCaffrey, who is also a strong candidate for MVP.

“He can go up against linebackers and safeties and make them miss and stuff in the pass game. He can catch the ball and make guys miss.” He then scores touchdowns after that. His numbers are absurd. Thus, he’s unquestionably a prized player—in my opinion, the most valued player—Purdy said.

244 carries for 1,292 yards and 13 touchdowns, along with 57 receptions for 509 yards and seven touchdowns, are McCaffrey’s totals.

Brock Purdy: ‘We Have to Do Our Job’

Week 16 will see Purdy and company play on Christmas Day, the second major holiday of the season, which he played down as a way to combine work and family.

“Christmas time and stuff for our family and friends is great for us,” Purdy remarked. “But at the same time, man, we all know that in addition to working and playing, we also need to put in the necessary time for studying and preparation.”

Niners Face a Bigger Challenge Than Thanksgiving Day Win

With a 31-13 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Thanksgiving Day in Week 12, the 49ers took care of business. In the victory, Purdy threw for 209 yards and a score against an interception while completing 70% of his attempts.

On Christmas Day, San Francisco will face a more formidable opponent in the Baltimore Ravens (11-3). The Ravens are undefeated in excess of one month and have never lost by more than one touchdown.

It will be a tremendous challenge for us, Purdy said.
