Brock Purdy, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, had just put on the worst performance of his NFL career when his night took a turn for the worst.

Against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football, Purdy threw a career-high four interceptions before being replaced by Sam Darnold due to a stinger that occurred in the fourth quarter.

With a touchdown pass later in the play, Darnold made an instant impression.

Though at first Darnold appeared to be the better choice, he eventually ran into the same problems as Purdy. Darnold orchestrated a 13-play drive on San Francisco’s last play, but it ended in disgrace when he threw the 49ers’ sixth interception of the game at the goal line, giving the Ravens a 33-19 victory.

Purdy was among the front-runners for NFL MVP going into the game, but his performance on Monday pretty well put a stop to the dream of being the last choice in the 2022 draft and becoming MVP in just two years.

With the loss, the 49ers’ record dropped to 11-4, tying them with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions for the best NFC record. With two weeks left in the regular season, home-field advantage is still in play, but San Francisco maintains its top ranking due to its superior record in conference games.

When the 49ers play again on Sunday against the Washington Commanders, they’ll be hoping to recover.
