In addition to talking about the “fine line” that separates intelligence from reckless play, Brock Purdy also explains why he needs to improve and take the Ravens loss as a lesson.

Although the youthful quarterback for the 49ers is unaffected by criticism from outside the team’s premises, he is nonetheless cognizant of it.

Purdy’s decision to wear a backward hat at the podium during press conferences was criticized by Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd last month, who raised concerns about the rising star’s professionalism.

Purdy used the question of whether he purposefully chose to wear his hat forward while addressing reporters on Thursday to respond lightheartedly to Cowherd’s criticism of his clothing choices.

“No, I didn’t. I simply happened to be,” Purdy said to the press. “I put it on forward because I had a hat head going in here. I underwent some maturation.”

Cowherd revealed back in November that he had doubts about the team because of Purdy’s decision to wear his cap backward.

“There is one thing that does make me pause on San Francisco,” Cowherd stated on “The Herd.””Hey, you guys want to hit some golf balls?” said Brock Purdy. You’re wearing a cap backwards. He’s not a quarterback for a big club.

“You would ask, ‘Are you a professional?’ if that guy arrived to move your furniture. “He needs to call his father and tell him to turn that around.”

Whether you wear a backwards cap or not, Purdy has been at the top of his game for the most of the 2023 NFL season. Despite a terrible performance in Monday night’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, he still leads the league in passer rating (122.2).

Purdy said after the defeat that he learned more from a humble Christmas night performance than just his new hat.

It’s a really beneficial learning opportunity. Purdy told reporters, “It’s not to say I’m going to be perfect going forward; it’s football; you’re not perfect.” But as a quarterback in this league, I believe that was really important for me.

“People can say some very nice things when things are going well, and it’s easy to buy into it to some extent. However, you must put forth your best effort, report for duty, maintain a persistent sense of self-doubt, and consistently demonstrate to your teammates your superiority throughout the course of a game. Thus, this is undoubtedly something I can learn from.”

The young quarterback will get an opportunity to shake off his most recent outing when the 49ers visit FedEx Field on Sunday to play the Washington Commanders.

Purdy’s next performance could allay Cowherd’s worries about the 24-year-old signal-caller going forward.
