Trevor Lawrence, the standout quarterback, reportedly had an unanticipated injury setback on Thursday, which severely hurt his chances of playing against the Carolina Panthers in Week 17. This season, Lawrence has been able to play through a number of injuries, but this new one might be different.

In Week 16, during the Jaguars’ loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lawrence had a sprained AC joint. The Jaguars signed Matt Barkley to the active roster in an apparent attempt to hedge their bets against their star quarterback playing this weekend, and Lawrence did not show up for practice on Wednesday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars suffer a setback Thursday

Josh Alper of NBC Sports reports that Lawrence experienced a setback on Thursday when he was listed as a non-participant on the injury report. Earlier in the day, head coach Doug Pederson stated that Lawrence should practice for the Jaguars.

At a news conference on Thursday, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson stated that quarterback Trevor Lawrence was supposed to return to practice on Thursday as a limited participant, but something did not go according to plan.

For the second day in a row, Lawrence is listed on the Jaguars injury report as not participating. As the squad continued to get ready for Sunday’s game against the Panthers, Pederson announced that he will be limited to individual exercises due to a right shoulder AC joint injury.

Another practice session is scheduled on Friday, but given his lack of improvement since leaving the Jaguars’ Week 16 loss to the Bucs, it appears more likely that Lawrence will miss a game for the first time in his NFL career. Lawrence will not start if C.J. Beathard is not cleared to go.

The Jaguars’ matchup with the 2-12 Panthers would be the one in which Lawrence would be forced to miss action in order to recover in time for the postseason. The Jaguars’ backup quarterback, C.J. Beathard, ought to be able to guide them against the worst offense and club in the NFL.

But the Panthers are coming off one of their greatest games thus far, which came in Week 16 against the Green Bay Packers. With four straight losses, the Jaguars have little room for error in the AFC South, which is knotted.
