In addition to talking about the “fine line” that separates intelligence from reckless play, Brock Purdy also explains why he needs to improve and take the Ravens loss as a lesson.

At Levi’s Stadium on Christmas, Brock Purdy had a performance he would want to forget against the Baltimore Ravens. He threw a career-high four interceptions before leaving the 49ers’ 33-19 loss with another stinger.

Despite suffering a few bad breaks during the catastrophe of Week 16, Purdy concurred with coach Kyle Shanahan over one play in particular that brought attention to a problem the second-year quarterback needs to solve.

Purdy thinks he lost sight of more sensible choices when he was too focused on making another huge play against the Ravens, which is why he threw his first interception against Baltimore.

Purdy told reporters on Thursday, “That [first] drive, we had two really explosive plays, the third down and then the next play after that to George [Kittle] again.” As a result, we call this play with inappropriate coverage even though the emotion has already built up and we are feeling happy. Thus, for me, it’s like, “Okay, dude, let’s get started and check it down.”

“I was combative at the time. I thought to myself, “Well, I’m trying to fit this one in, just had two big plays.” Which, in retrospect, was obviously not the best choice and not the quarterback’s best play.

Despite the thrill of big-time plays, the 24-year-old now realizes he needs to control his emotions.

“Now, whichever play comes next, you have to play it correctly and not just rely on the feelings and everything you experienced in the previous plays,” Purdy stated. I therefore had to discover that the hard way.

“I think I understand when and when I can be aggressive, take a chance, take a shot, and when I should progress, check it down, throw it away, those kinds of things,” the player said after playing enough games.

Purdy must stay out of trouble at 11-4 if San Francisco wants to win a sixth Super Bowl.

Purdy said, “Obviously, we’d be excited to play them and all that if we saw them again down the road, but we’re just taking it one day at a time, and we’ll see how it all goes.
