The Jaguars believed they were getting a superstar quarterback when they drafted Trevor Lawrence first overall in 2021. Thus far, he has lived up to expectations, becoming a bona fide NFL star in just three years and aiding in the turnaround of Jacksonville’s franchise.

But in the NFL, injuries are unavoidable, and Lawrence has now experienced the bug for the first time in his brief career. The quarterback for the Jaguars could miss the remainder of the 2023 season after suffering an ankle injury on Monday night.

With a victory over the Bengals in prime time, the Jaguars could have taken the lead in the AFC, but Cincinnati’s Jake Browning guided the team to an overtime victory in Jacksonville. Doug Pederson’s team finished the game with an 8-4 record, good for fourth place in the conference.

In the AFC South, Jacksonville is unbeaten, but Houston and Indianapolis are closely trailing them both at 7-5. It leaves backup quarterback C.J. Beathard to decide not only the division’s outcome but also the future of the Jaguars’ season.

The 30-year-old began his NFL career with the 49ers and is currently in his third season with the Jags. Despite the tiny sample size, he has NFL starting experience. Although Lawrence’s ailment is yet unknown, Duval might need to support Beathard for the remainder of 2023.
