We’re in a bad place the morning after an NFC contender game, which is terrible because it’s always a letdown when an otherwise exciting and high-stakes game ends and the talk is all about the officiating.

The Dallas Cowboys, who were just declared NFC North champions, barely managed to hold off the Detroit Lions in order to maintain their prospects of winning their own division. Nevertheless, we’re focusing about referee Brad Allen and his crew’s late-game gaffe rather than the amazing performances of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb or the tenacity of a Lions team trying to establish themselves as a real Super Bowl contender.

That really sucks. And believe it or not, Lions quarterback Jared Goff agrees with me.

Goff stated, “It sucks,” according to Colton Pouncy of The Athletic, following the game. “Man, that’s unfortunate. I’m not sure if I’ve ever experienced this sensation before, but it seems like you won even though you didn’t.

After taking the lead after touchdowns from Jared Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown and Goff to eligible tackle Taylor Decker, it looked for a brief while as though Detroit would easily defeat the Cowboys 21–20. However, that wasn’t the case.

Despite the fact that Taylor Decker was seen approaching Brad Allen before to the play on an ESPN replay, Decker was fined for failing to report as eligible. Detroit’s attempt to pull off an upset in Dallas was thwarted after a ball from Jared Goff hit the ground on the third attempt, after the two-point conversion was wiped off the board and Dallas was penalized on the second attempt.

Detroit might have maintained their chances of earning the top seed and home field advantage throughout the NFC Playoffs with a victory at Jerry World. They appear to be guaranteed the #3 seed going forward, which should get them at least a home game in the Wild Card Round. Hopefully Brad Allen isn’t in the vicinity of Detroit on the second weekend of January
