We haven’t had a solid, high-quality Colin Cowherd metaphor to chew over in a while, so hearing about this was really exciting. The main topic of conversation on Thursday’s episode of The Herd was the NFL coaching carousel, which begins with Week 18 and ends with Black Monday. Not because he is really in danger of losing his job, but rather because the Dallas Cowboys may consider trading for Mike McCarthy should they underperform and miss the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

Cowherd compared the Cowboys coach to a fantastic television show that you love until an awful ending that makes you feel lousy about the entire thing.

Again, it’s right on the point, but it’s astonishing how little of this five-minute video he uses to clarify what he means. What a wonderful way to sum up McCarthy. After months and months of appreciating what you’re witnessing, you start to wonder why it was all for when he doesn’t successfully land the plane.

That has been McCarthy’s tale for many years. Here, he is not being unfairly classified. Each time he crosses the finish line completely and then trips, landing face-first on the ground. While it wasn’t nearly as horrible as the conclusion of Game of Thrones, the Dak Prescott spike incident that terminated Dallas’ 2021–2022 season sure came close.

That’s where it gets a little fuzzy, I suppose. There are TV shows that have disastrous endings that wreck the entire series. That’s not exactly McCarthy’s style of performance. His squad never completely falters to the point of embarrassment. They just strive until he makes a stupid choice that sends them plunging to the bottom. To parody another popular HBO show, it’s probably more akin to The Sopranos. McCarthy keeps returning for this reason, even after failing to land a job in the end.
