The Washington Commanders are starting a new chapter in their history. Coach Ron Rivera was sacked, which is not surprising, and Bob Myers, the guy behind the dominant Golden State Warriors NBA club, is joining the team.

The Commanders’ season ended with a dismal 4-13 record, as they were defeated 38-10 by the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. After four seasons, Rivera, who turned 62 on Sunday, is leaving. Most of the coaching staff and general manager Martin Mayhew are also anticipated to depart.

Following the Cowboys’ defeat, he said he met with owner Josh Harris early on Monday. It was at that meeting that he was notified of his departure, which signals the start of a significant change behind the scenes.

According to Ian Rapoport on Monday morning, the Commanders are also hiring Myers, the two-time NBA Executive of the Year who is credited with planning the Warriors’ success, to manage the team. The former general manager of the Minnesota Vikings, Rick Spielman, is also joining to hold hire replacements.

One of the many reasons to be optimistic about the person who takes over as coach in place of Rivera is the coming of Myers.

Harris’s historic $6 billion acquisition of the Commanders was only finalized in July, and now he has the opportunity to choose someone fresh to add his own unique touch to the group.

The Commanders will also get the second pick in the Draft later this year as a result of the Cowboys’ defeat.

They’ll probably target either Drake Maye of North Carolina or Caleb Williams of USC, who are the top two quarterback prospects.

During Rivera’s four seasons leading Washington’s football operations, the team earned one postseason berth, winning a very weak NFC East at 7-9 in 2020. He never enjoyed a successful season.

In the regular season, Rivera will finish exactly one game below.500 at 102-103-2 if he does not land another head position in the league. Rivera led Washington to a 26-40-1 record.

Rivera left the Atlanta Falcons a few hours after Arthur Smith was cut.

The Falcons’ final game of the season was a 48-10 loss to the Saints on Sunday, capping a 7-10 campaign.
