Which side of the ball, offense or defense, has the more significant gap for the 49ers?

We ranked the biggest offenses in the NFC on Thursday. Today we’ll switch gears and evaluate the best defense methods. If it’s true that defense wins championships, could the 49ers, who are in good hands, make the playoffs?

The reason the 49ers beat the Cowboys was because of their good defense. Dallas is allowing 112.4 yards per game.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Just looking at the stats and seeing that Tampa’s defense ranks 11th in yards allowed per game doesn’t inspire confidence. Tampa’s run defense is stingy, allowing 95.3 yards per game. Their defense is only good in the red zone and in scoring situations. Tampa ranked first in red zone percentage (42.59%) and field goal percentage (58.62%). They also ranked third in the NFC in points allowed per game at 19.1.

green bay packers: Rashan Gary and Preston Smith make up a true duo for Green Bay at the cornerback position. Jaire Alexander wasn’t disqualified due to a bad coin flip, but he’s still a strong cover. This unit will be even stronger when De’Vondre Campbell is healthy. The Packers allow the fifth-fewest points (20.6) in the NFC and the second-fewest sacks per pass attempt (8.60%) in the NFC.

Detroit Lions/Los Angeles Rams (tie): It’s like flipping a coin between a Leo and a Ram. Both teams are tied for 9th (Detroit) and 10th (Rams) in total yards per game. Detroit ranks second in the NFC in yards allowed. The Rams allow fewer points per game, 22.2 compared to the Lions’ 23.2. Aaron Donald is still elite, but statistically the Lions have played similar defense under Aaron Glenn. The Rams and Lions are also tied for the most sacks per pass attempt.

Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles rank 13th in the NFC in yards allowed per game. They rank 15th in passes allowed per game. It ranks 11th in block rate. 10th in sacks per pass attempt. They rank 14th in points per game. They are 15th in third downs and 13th in scoring situations. Matt Patricia is not saving this team.
