A coach with ties to Sean McVay is set to become the Bears' play caller after spending three years under Pete Carroll in Seattle.

The new Bears offensive coordinator has experience calling plays and stopping Sean McVay’s offense.

Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane Waldron will be the Bears’ new offensive coordinator, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

The decision ends an extensive search for the next coordinator, with more than half of the candidates joining the Rams’ offense. Now the reading of tea leaves starts with the meaning of the fourth position. Waldron was involved in the revival of Geno Smith’s QB career in Seattle. Whether this means anything for the Bears and their future Justin Fields or Caleb Williams decision is open to interpretation, but both candidates have been interviewed with hints about where they could go, and Waldron didn’t fit into either.

Waldron works on the QB Collective team. Williams also worked with QB Collective. Waldron was Seattle’s offensive coordinator for three seasons under Pete Carroll, who is no longer the Seahawks coach. Waldron didn’t have much offensive success in Seattle, suffering serious quarterback issues during his time with the team.

Waldron was with McVay from 2017 to 2020 and also in 2016 when McVay served as Washington’s offensive coordinator. Waldron became a quality control coach and then served as coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Much of the focus on the Rams offense comes from McVay using motion to break down defenses. This is a feature that is described as differentiating this type of West Coast attack from other attacks that use a wide area blocking approach.

The Bears also need a quarterbacks coach, receivers coach, running backs coach, and if they want a passing game coordinator, those positions will need to be filled. They still have coach Jim Dray and offensive line coach Chris Morgan on staff. They are also looking for a defensive coordinator and have interviewed former Bears safety Chris Harris for the position. Offensive coordinators under consideration include Greg Roman, Clint Kubiak, Greg Olson, Liam Cohen, Marcus Brady, Thomas Brown, Zach Robinson and Kliff Kingsbury.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see one or more of these lists pop up somewhere on the Bears’ staff.
