Trent Baalke, general manager of the Jaguars, speaks to the media at TIAA Bank Field on Friday afternoon.

Once he reached Jacksonville, Florida, Trevor Lawrence, the first-round selection of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021, along with club owner Shad Khan, head coach Urban Meyer, and general manager Trent Baalke, attended a press conference inside TIAA Bank Field on Friday morning, April 30, 2021. Running back Travis Etienne, a former teammate of Lawrence at Clemson, and the Jaguars’ 25th choice in the first round of the draft also joined them. [Florida Times-Union/Bob Self]

It’s possible that the Jacksonville Jaguars are turning off a key player before they even get to start contract talks.

Josh Allen, a standout pass rusher for the Jaguars, is expected to become a free agency this summer; however, the two parties have not yet discussed a long-term contract. Trent Baalke, the general manager, officially stated on Thursday that Allen is intended to “be a Jaguar” despite this.

Perhaps the intended impact of these remarks was not achieved. Allen’s camp is not thrilled that Baalke disclosed to the media the current status of the negotiations without first talking to them about a new contract, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. While Baalke is talking about his situation with the media, Allen is prepared to talk about a contract, and his camp is perplexed as to why Baalke has not reached out to them.

After recording a career-high 17.5 sacks, Allen is undoubtedly headed for a big deal. He might have to make do with the franchise tag at this rate. Baalke might find that further alienating his supporters makes him even less popular among Jaguars supporters.
