The Jacksonville Jaguars were publicly discussing extending Trevor Lawrence’s contract a year ago, when he was the team’s first selection. There’s a lot more mystery about Lawrence’s payment timeline now.

“No, I believe that within the next several days, we will have a meeting with ownership. When asked if plans to extend Lawrence this offseason have changed, Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke responded on Thursday, saying, “Sit down with the head coach, sit down with the personnel staff, and really review the roster.”

It’s not like we’re starting from scratch—we’ve already done it. Really just have a heart-to-heart conversation with all the guys who might be on the horizon about where we are at. We would like to see some of these talented guys continue in the future.

Although Baalke stated that he wouldn’t rule out giving Lawrence an extension during the summer, it was easy to read between the lines. For better or worse, Lawrence’s 2023 campaign had numerous elements that may have delayed his extension by one year.

Lawrence completed 65.6% of his throws for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, and seven fumble losses by the end of the season. Due to four separate injuries, Lawrence also missed his first career start and appeared to be limping to the end of the season.

Like all third-year players in this league, I believe Trevor had another learning year. I believe he made significant progress in a few areas,” Baalke remarked. “When you look at this season, there are two things we need to do better: we need to keep him safe and protected, and he needs to protect himself better. He regrettably had four serious injuries this year. It’s concerning when your quarterback has concussions, knee, ankle, and throwing shoulder injuries all in the same season.”

Therefore, we need to try to improve it. There are many factors that go into that; it’s not just one, but we need to do a better job there. There is no question about Trevor’s long-term relationship with this squad. We’ll complete the task at the proper time.
