49ers Urged to Flip Dre Greenlaw in ‘Home Run’ Trade Proposal

In 2024, Kyle Shanahan might make a deal to acquire Patrick Surtain II.

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw of the San Francisco 49ers made a play that was among the biggest of the season, but in 2024, he might end up with a different team.

This offseason, Bleacher Report suggested that the 49ers deal All-Pro cornerback Patrick Surtain II of the Denver Broncos to the Denver Broncos for Greenlaw and the team’s first round choice. Greenlaw, who will be entering the final season of a two-year, $16.4 million contract, deserves to be traded given his $9.63 million salary cap impact.

Dealing with him would free up $6.8 million in cap space, according to staff writers at Bleacher Report. Before the trade deadline, the 49ers reportedly attempted to wrest Surtain from the Broncos, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. It could be a smart move for San Francisco to revisit that concept.

The crew of Bleacher Report went on, “Surtain is entering the fourth year of his rookie deal and wouldn’t eat a ton of 2024 cap space.” He’s also among the football team’s top young corners. He gave up an opposing quarterback rating of just 88.2 this past season while covering.

Surtain would strengthen a 49ers secondary that might use some work. With 120 tackles and 1.5 sacks throughout the regular season, Greenlaw had a solid year. However, his most noteworthy performance was an interception that helped the team defeat the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round.

With Surtain on board, the 49ers will have a cornerback with seven interceptions in his first three professional seasons. In all those seasons, he recorded at least 58 tackles.

Staff at Bleacher Report stated, “Surtain is definitely worth a late first-round pick, and he would pair well with Charvarius Ward on the perimeter.” “Denver would get a great linebacker to help strengthen its 29th-ranked defense and a premium pick that might be used to help move up for a new quarterback.”

With an anticipated $1.36 million in space for 2024, this deal wouldn’t completely alleviate the 49ers’ salary cap issues because Surtain will be expensive. In 2024, the last year of his four-year, $20.96 million contract, he is expected to earn $3.51 million.

Dre Greenlaw: ‘We’re Going to the Super Bowl’ Trade speculation aside, Greenlaw will lock in on playing in the 2024 Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs on February 11. “I can’t even describe the feeling,” Greenlaw told NBC Sports Bay Area as he grabbed his son after a 34-31 NFC Championship Game win. “We’re going to the Super Bowl!” Greenlaw tallied seven tackles in the comeback Detroit Lions on Sunday despite a stinger in the second quarter. He returned to finish the game, and head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t express any concern about the injury afterward.

Dre Greenlaw: “That’s the main thing”

There were several worries in the first half against the Lions, who led 24-7 at the interval. After stopping the Lions on a fourth-down defensive play to start the second half, the 49ers took a 24-10 lead.

Greenlaw remarked, “I just know that these boys came out here and fought from the start to the finish.” And we came out here and fought regardless of the situation, regardless of the score, 24-7. And I’m honored to be a member of this group. Of all the guys that fought, I’m proud.

That’s the main idea, Greenlaw continued. “Our team has a lot of guys that can score points.”
