The Detroit Lions got a pleasant surprise when offensive coordinator Ben Johnson decided to pass on the head coaching opportunity and return to his current role.

His message is clear to at least one Lions star. On his weekly podcast “St. Brown Brothers, Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown spoke with Johnson on Tuesday before the offensive coordinator publicly confirmed his return. Johnson said he wants to stay at St. Brown and felt he “got the job done.” “in Detroit. “I said, ‘So what’s going on?’ I have an interview and you’re leaving?'” said St. Brown, as transcribed by Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper: “I said, ‘You know, I’m on my way. at the facility,” and I couldn’t sleep last night.

“He said he slept.” He wanted to stay, thinking, “There is unfinished business.” … He said his heart is in Detroit and he wants to stay. He told me on the way to the unit.If the Lions had lost the NFC championship any other way, Johnson might have felt differently. But they went into halftime outscoring San Francisco 24-7.

That may have helped make it difficult for Johnson to leave now. There were reports that Johnson was unable to take over as head coach due to financial reasons. Maybe the talk of “unfinished business” is one way to turn things around, but Lions fans will take it as a reason either way.
