Last year, the Jaguars made it rather evident that they intended to give Trevor Lawrence.

Trent Baalke, the general manager, recently stated to the media that their position hasn’t altered. Regarding Steezy Trev’s contract status, though, there haven’t been any developments. It’s understandable why.

Lawrence’s rookie contract expires in one more year. He was the first overall choice in the 2021 draft. Nonetheless, there’s a 99.9 percent chance Jacksonville will exercise his option in the fifth year, thus keeping him under contract until 2025.

This provides them with almost two years to finalize an agreement. The Jaguars should have some leeway because not many young quarterbacks are expected to receive extensions.

To preserve Lawrence’s rights until 2026, the Jaguars have the option to utilize the franchise tag in the event that things get out of hand (see Josh Allen’s scenario).

The former Clemson Tiger’s contract discussions may take a backseat when you consider that they have other demands. The front office can surround him with a far better supporting cast if they wait to pay him.

If all of that wasn’t enough to delay talks, Lawrence is coming off of a season in which he failed to advance in his growth, which is another reason to put off talks.

Even though his decline was largely caused by injuries, a nonexistent running game, and a subpar offensive line, his stock still suffered. It would be wiser for him to hold off on increasing his worth and demanding the maximum dollar he is due.

Rewinding to what Baalke said. There will be compensation for Trevor Lawrence. Simply said, not this year.
