When former defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and the Bills parted ways last February, Buffalo didn’t replace Frazier until the 2023 season.
Instead, head coach Sean McDermott assumed the role of the team’s defensive play caller. The Bills promoted Bobby Babich from linebacker to defensive coordinator on Tuesday.
But as ESPN’s Alena Getzenberg points out, Buffalo is still figuring out whether McDermott or Babic will be the ones to define their defensive game in 2024. General manager Brandon Beane said last week that the team is comfortable with whatever McDermott wants.
“If [McDermott] feels he needs someone else to take over, he will,” Bean said, via Getzengberg. “He said, ‘Oh yeah, I can do it.’ If you say “I want to do it again” you will… I didn’t bother telling him he couldn’t wear both hats.
The Bills finished the 2023 regular season fourth in points allowed and ninth in yards allowed.
