The Packers have an abundance of draft picks in 2024, but they also have a lot of debt—$17.028 million for Aaron Jones and $40.018 million for David Bakhtiari—and cap space. With two selections in Rounds 2 and 3, and five picks in the first three rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Packers front office is set up to be active this offseason.

Usually, those picks would be used only in the draft for a team whose ideology is based on drafting and developing players. However, certain recent remarks made during a press conference by Green Bay made it known that a blockbuster trade might happen.

In an interview with media on the team’s draft capital prior to the 2024 NFL Draft, general manager Brian Gutekunst proposed that the picks provide Green Bay flexibility to choose where to select in the draft or even to add a veteran player this offseason.

“It may involve moving, dealing, or staying put and selecting players—who knows, maybe exchanging those picks for experienced players.”

Moving up in Round 1 appears to be a realistic option, since there are needs on both sides of the ball and the top class of the 2024 NFL Draft is fairly good. But the addition of win-now players who can contribute seasoned leadership and perform at a high level right away expands the pool of Packers trade targets.

When evaluating prospective 2024 acquisition targets for the Packers, it’s critical to maintain realism. Justin Simmons or Patrick Surtain II won’t be traded by the Denver Broncos unless they are able to move up for the first overall pick. Similarly, teams vying for the Super Bowl won’t deal one of their finest players.
