The 49ers are anticipated to conclude the interviews by the end of the week, indicating that the search for a new defensive coordinator was completed quickly after sacking Steve Wilks 12 days earlier.

After only one season in the role and a few days after the Super Bowl, Wilks was let go by the 49ers earlier in February due to inconsistent play from their defense.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the 49ers had officially finished two interviews as of Monday. For the position of defensive coordinator, head coach Kyle Shanahan informed Maiocco that the 49ers’ defensive pass game specialist Nick Sorensen and Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley had both been interviewed.

Following a 5-9 start to the season, former Chargers head coach Staley—who guided the team from 2021 to 2023—was sacked in December.

Even though Sorensen has been a member of the 49ers since 2022, he began his career as a defensive assistant before serving as the pass game coordinator the previous campaign.

Despite giving up just 17.5 points per game in the previous season, the 49ers’ defense faltered during the playoffs.

Head coach Shanahan is searching for the ideal defensive coordinator to lead the 49ers to victory in the upcoming season after they were upset winners of the Super Bowl the previous year.

Shanahan has stated that Daniel Bullocks, the coach of the 49ers defensive backs, is anticipated to interview later this week for the position of defensive coordinator.

More information is anticipated because NFL regulations mandate that teams examine at least two minority candidates for coordinator positions.
