Although rumors of cousins joining with 49ers head coach kyle shanahan have surfaced multiple times this offseason, the niners’ $7.41 million salary cap is still the biggest obstacle.
“You could easily finagle it with a huge signing bonus… to have a low cap hit for 2024 and support the 49ers,” podcast host phil mackey said. In 2012 and 2013, shanahan worked with cousins as part of the then-washington redskins. Shanahan tried to trade for cousins in 2017, according to alec lewis of the athletic.

With the 49ers, zulgad said, “this will be the situation where kirk never gets to the super bowl.”

According to Mackey, this is a one-year circumstance that is comparable to the Los Angeles Rams’ experience when they gambled big on quarterback Matthew Stafford in an attempt to win a Super Bowl but ultimately paid a heavy price.

Mackey recalled the 49ers’ quarterback carousel of recent years, from jimmy garoppolo to trey lance to purdy, to make sense of it. The niners sacked a super bowl quarterback and traded a former no. 1 quarterback.

“If they [49ers management] have already exhausted the point that they can go with this quarterback,” zulgad said, “they have shown that they will take off very good or highly drafted quarterbacks in the blink of an eye.”
According to the hosts, the 49ers could draft purdy in the first round, though the team would keep a super bowl quarterback as the backup if not.
