Brandon Staley, ex-John Carroll coach, to be hired as San Francisco 49ers assistant

According to sources, former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley is anticipated to join the San Francisco 49ers, the reigning NFC champion, as an assistant head coach.

After the Chargers fired 41-year-old Staley in December 2023 due to the team’s 5-9 start to the previous season, Staley will now work for the 49ers. He has a 24–24 overall record during his three years as head coach of the Chargers.

Staley had been the outside linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears (2017–18) and Denver Broncos (2019) in addition to serving as defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams (2020).

Perry, Ohio, native Staley first became a coach in the NFL after working as the defensive coordinator for Division III John Carroll University twice: in 2013 and 2015–16. In between, he also held the position at James Madison University.

ESPN was the first to report on Staley’s employment as the 49ers assistant head coach.

The 49ers also anticipate promoting defensive pass game specialist and nickel cornerbacks coach Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator in addition to Staley. Sorensen will take over for previous defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who was fired on February 14th, just after the 49ers suffered a 25-22 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.
