The jacksonville jaguars gave foley fatukasi a, well, unfortunate birthday present.

Foley fatukasi was always expected to be released by the jacksonville jaguars this offseason.

They probably didn’t expect it to happen on the same day as the team wished him happy birthday on social media.

The jaguars made their decision on saturday afternoon to free fatukasi two years after signing him in free agency, according to various outlets.

The news came after the jaguars had already wished fatukasi a happy birthday on x, causing a lot of buzz on social media.

Although the idea of firing a player on his birthday would never work, there isn’t much to lose here. Front offices have no idea how to make such changes on social media, nor do they have a sense of how to post.

Plus, it’s early march. Players are released at a later date as teams work to save extra cap space before free agency.

Regardless, the decision’s timing will always be remembered as traumatic. The jaguars will save $3.5 million in cap space by releasing fatukasi, though they will consume $9,233,334 in dead cap.

Fatukasi’s dead cap number will be just outside the top ten in terms of cap huts for the jaguars in 2024. Fatukasi was originally scheduled to cost $12,808,334 in 2024, the jaguars’ fifth-highest cap hit.

Fatukasi suffered injuries during his two years in jacksonville, but he only played 30 games out of a possible 34, starting with 29 games.

In 2022, he appeared in both playoff games. Fatukasi started in 2022 with 14 games, including 13 games. He finished the season with 24 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits.

Fatukasi started 16 games in 2023 and recorded 24 tackles, three tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits.
