According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the former Bolles graduate and resident of Jacksonville will be joining the Jacksonville Jaguars, who will trade a sixth-round pick to the New England Patriots.

Jones, who will turn 26 in September, was selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, making him Trevor Lawrence’s backup going forward. Jones has taken over as the starting quarterback for the Jaguars, meaning that veteran quarterback C.J. Beathard may be dismissed after one more season.

Jones had a fantastic last season at Alabama, earning him the No. 15 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Jones’s greatest season in New England came in his debut year, when he started and finished 10-7 while throwing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

Jones regressed in 2022, going 6-8 in 14 starts and throwing for 2,997 yards and 14 touchdowns with 11 interceptions.

Jones’ final season with the Patriots occurred in 2023; he started 11 games and finished 2-9 before being benched. Jones was a former first-round selection. Jones passed for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in his third season.

The Jaguars will now have eight picks in the NFL Draft of 2024 in addition to Jones’ $2,785,412 cap charge. Jones’ fifth-year option, which the Jaguars own the rights to, will undoubtedly be turned down.

Jones will now start for the Jaguars as Lawrence’s backup, giving Lawrence—who suffered four injuries last season—more insurance as they go forward.
