Frivolously, the San Francisco 49ers are trying to increase their cap space. One of the best tight ends in the game, George Kittle, has a new deal that they are renegotiating.
Just before the 2020 NFL season, Kittle originally inked a five-year, $75 million contract extension with the 49ers. He previously restructured his contract before the 2023 season, and George is set to restructure again ahead of the 2024 season.
The restructure will create roughly $10 million in cap space from 2024 from Kittle. It pushes Kittle’s cap hits down the road but allows the team to get cap-compliant immediately.
San Francisco 49ers Cap Moves
In 2020, Kittle agreed to a $75 million, five-year contract with the 49ers. According to his contract, he would contribute $21.956 million against the cap this season in addition to earning a base salary of $13.4 million. Kittle reorganized in 2023 with Trent Williams, an All-Pro offensive tackle, freeing up $23.2 million in cap room.

The announcement coincided with defensive end Nick Bosa of the 49ers receiving the largest-ever contract for a defensive player in NFL history—a five-year, $170 million extension.
The cap moves are still coming in 2024. In order to help the San Francisco 49ers free up cap space, George Kittle and Javon Hargrave have joined Fred Warner in restructuring their contracts. Kyle Juszczyk, a fullback, also underwent restructuring to free up an additional $1 million.
Arik Armstead, a defensive tackle, was released with a post-June 1 designation, releasing $18 million under the cap. The 49ers are determined to make room, even though this was one of the more unexpected offseason decisions.Later, the Jaguars signed Arik Armstead.

Kittle has the third-best receiving grade of any tight end in PFF history as well as the third-best overall rating overall, according to Pro Football Focus. His run-blocking grade of 83.2 during his career is also the highest for the past ten years at this position.
