Brock Purdy was Mr. Irrelevant two years ago. The 262nd pick overall in the 2022 NFL Draft will have a mega-rich contract extension when the 2025 season rolls around.

Purdy, who is 24 years old, will earn $985,000 in 2024 when he plays out the last year of his rookie contract, as reported by OverTheCap.com.

Purdy has positioned himself for a sizable salary after moving from being the final pick in the NFL Draft to the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, leading his team to the NFC championship game in his rookie season, and then participating in a Super Bowl in his second season.

The 49ers are aware that day is approaching and that Purdy’s price will only rise if he has another great season. CEO of the team Jed York is aware that you have to compensate quarterbacks in the NFL when they do well.

“Having your quarterback among the highest paid players on your team and in the league is a good problem,” York remarked on Tuesday during the NFL’s annual owners meetings, as reported by The Mercury News.

It is the nature of the market. Brock is about to make a request that has never been made before. I’m not sure how many quarterbacks are currently making over $40 million [per season].

Nine quarterbacks in the NFL currently earn an average salary of more than $40 million each season. Depending on how Purdy’s and the Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott’s contracts proceed, two more players may fall into that category by 2025.

York, who assumes the role of main owner this week, is aware that in the NFL, a lackluster quarterback will

hinder your success. After throwing for 4,280 yards, a 49ers team record, and 31 touchdowns in 2023, Purdy was selected to the Pro Bowl.

He has cemented a position that has been unstable for the past few years. Since 2014, just two 49ers quarterbacks have started 16 games in a season: Purdy (2023) and Jimmy Garoppolo (2019). Since Colin Kaepernick started every game in the 2013 and 2014 seasons, nine different players have filled the position of center.

York declared, “I think the quarterback is the most important position in all of sports, not just football. Those guys should be paid a lot of money.”

Purdy’s rookie contract has allowed the 49ers to bolster other sections of the club, and they are anticipated to challenge for the Super Bowl once more. What they plan to do with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk this offseason is one big question that hasn’t been resolved yet. The organization has stated that they want to reward the 25-year-old, who is coming off consecutive seasons of 1,000 yards or more, and he will make $14.1 million in his fifth season.

The 49ers front office will need to put together the puzzle of Aiyuk and Purdy’s extensions in order to determine their future salary cap scenario. Raises to players have been earned, and the organization’s policy is to look after yourself before entering the free agent market.

York remarked, “Brandon, I’d much rather pay guys we drafted than guys we didn’t draft.” “Just as we have in the past, we’ll exert every effort to find a means to make those work.”
