At the NFL Annual Meeting on Monday, I questioned John Lynch why the 49ers selected former Chargers head coach Brandon Staley to be their associate head coach.As stated by Lynch:
How come you brought on Brandon Staley? What is he going to do, given that he is obviously not the defensive coordinator and has no experience with the wide nine? Will he assist in creating game strategies and pressure tactics?
Our true goal was to return to our identity as a defense and our playing philosophy. Nick Sorensen offered an excellent idea on how we could accomplish it, but you also want to continuously change, like we did with the Wide 9.
Can we deploy the Wide 9 and still maintain the integrity of our defense, as Yle mentioned that he used to get upset when he coached against it? And we succeeded in doing so.

He’s a terrific addition, in my opinion, and the defensive staff is clicking quite well together. I believe Brandon was a great addition to our facility, but we still need to put everything together.”
