Do you think Georgia tight end Amarius Mims will be the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first-round selection pick?
The 2024 NFL Draft is still about a month away, but some favorites are starting to emerge. Even after trading away Diontae Johnson, further recent indications seem to suggest the Steelers are not all in on a first-round wide receiver.
However, there’s more and more evidence that suggests they prefer an offensive lineman. They desperately need an upgrade at tackle, but they also have a huge void at center. While many Steelers supporters are already pining for Oregon’s Jackson Powers-Johnson at center, center is frequently selected in the second round.
It was recently revealed that Georgia tight end Amarius Mims was invited by the Steelers for a pre-draft visit. Though not as a Day One starter, he profiles as a possible right tackle. Nevertheless, Broderick Jones’ lack of preparedness from Day One did not deter the Steelers from trading up for him last season.
While there are other candidates for a first-round tackle, Mims is the most well-known. Additionally, they have looked at all of their alternatives, including pre-draft visitors, for the tackle position. But a secret weapon for getting him going fast is the fact that Jones and Mims were teammates in college.
The Steelers are stuck with Dan Moore Jr. at left tackle until they find a better option, as he is thought to be one of the worst starting tackles in the NFL. Although Jones was selected as a left tackle, he spent the majority of his rookie season as a right tackle.
If the Steelers select Mims in the draft, he probably won’t play right away, but they may work on other options if they believe he can play for a while. Moore might begin training on the right side early on and Jones could be moved to left tackle full-time. Although it’s not the best option, the longer he works there, the less of a nasty man he should be.
Of course, the Steelers may also select a defensive back or defensive lineman in the first round. We also can’t write off completely the chance that they select a wide receiver. Perhaps they still consider Jackson Powers-Johnson to be their chosen one. However, I believe that, when looking at things from the outside, Mims has a case to be the favorite at this time.
The Steelers’ 2023 campaign has come to an end, culminating in a depressing, lopsided playoff defeat—a fate that many other teams have shared in recent memory. Their complete absence from the playoffs is the only alteration in recent years. However, they now face yet another lengthy offseason after being thoroughly embarrassed by the Buffalo Bills in the Wildcard Round.
The quarterback position is the one that the team is most concerned about.Are they squandering a year, or does Russell Wilson make them a Super Bowl-caliber team? Will the Steelers let him go after just one season or will he play one more season before leaving? In what way will the group handle the depth chart?
Honestly, even if the primary free agency list is smaller than normal, the Steelers have more questions than usual surrounding them this offseason. It’s just a question of when and how? From here, where do they go? How do they figure out where to go next?
