A possible successor to Charlie Woerner

Brock Wright, a restricted free agent with the Detroit Lions, has accepted an offer sheet from the San Francisco 49ers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Detroit has until May 5th to respond to the Niners’ offer. Wright received an original round RFA tender from the Lions, good for a one-year contract valued at $2.985 million. Wright was undrafted, therefore the 49ers would not have to forfeit any draft money.

Wright had 13 receptions on 14 targets by the end of the 2023 regular season. One of the passes was grabbed by him for a score. The 6’5, 259-pound tight end came out of Notre Dame as an undrafted free agent. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the Fighting Irish product has a history of blocking.

Wright had 48 pass-blocking snaps and 193 run-blocking snaps in 2024; the Lions had the best offensive line in the NFL, so it makes sense for Kyle Shanahan’s offense to select their blocking tight end. Wright would likely replace Charlie Woerner and his role, and the Lions do not match the 49ers’ offer.
