The Jacksonville Jaguars still need a wide receiver even after they signed Gabe Davis in free agency.

They will have the opportunity to select one of the best receiver prospects in the class of 2024 with the 17th overall choice. In The 33rd Team’s most recent mock draft, the Jags select a wide receiver, but they make an odd selection.

The 33rd Team’s Ian Valentino projects that the Jags will select Xavier Worthy at No. 17. He makes the case that the former Texas standout would be a perfect Calvin Ridley substitute, mostly because of his quickness and capacity to gain yardage after the catch.

“The Jacksonville Jaguars are temporarily damaged by Calvin Ridley’s loss, but Tennessee made the correct decision in not paying him. With Zay Jones, Christian Kirk, and Gabe Davis as the Jaguars’ starting trio without an explosive option, Xavier Worthy’s record-breaking speed is particularly alluring.

Worthy can gain easy yards after the catch thanks to his open-field quickness and field vision. Although he still needs to work on becoming a more dependable pass-catcher and route runner, his impact on the game is indisputable.”

At the Scouting Combine, Worthy made waves by running the 40-yard sprint in a then-new record time of 4.21 seconds. He proved there was more to his game than just speed when he went on to have an incredible pro day. The 2023 first-team All-Big 12 player was a three-year starter for the Longhorns and a four-star recruit coming out of high school. He caught 75 passes for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns the previous season.

Even though Worthy is quite athletic, he does have certain problems, the majority of which are related to his small stature.

At 165 pounds, he finds it tough to come down with contested catches and to withstand media attention. Additionally, despite the fact that he does a decent job of tracking the football.
