Prior to the 2024 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions took care of one of their most valuable playmakers.

The front staff is making sure the Lions retain and recruit players who can help them get to the game in February of next year because they were only a few plays away from making the Super Bowl the previous season.

The Detroit Lions need to extend Jared Goff

Quarterback Jared Goff is the largest contract the Lions have to deal with this offseason. This season, Goff is scheduled to play in the last year of his contract. Although nothing has emerged from the smoke at this stage of the offseason, both parties are interested in an extension.

The Lions extended Amon-Ra St. Brown before the draft

For the upcoming several seasons, the Lions made sure to keep Goff’s top target on the field. The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Amon-Ra St. Brown has agreed to a $120 million, four-year contract extension with the Lions. Of that, $77 million is guaranteed for him.

The Lions are wise to move quickly to finalize a new contract. With the expansion of the pay cap in recent years, there has been a significant shift in the wide receiver market. This summer, the top wide receivers are reportedly seeking contracts worth $30 million annually, and that figure is predicted to rise in the coming seasons.

Prior to the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers extending Brandon Aiyuk and CeeDee Lamb, the Lions made sure to settle this. San Francisco might face further pressure to trade their top wide receiver away in the draft on Thursday night, since Aiyuk and the 49ers are still far from finalizing a new contract. The agreement was made at an intriguing time for a team attempting to catch the 49ers, and this move might potentially hurt San Francisco’s roster in the 2019 campaign.

In the fourth round of the NFL Draft in 2021, St. Brown was chosen by the Lions. In his first three seasons with Detroit, he exceeded the expectations of NFL scouts by a wide margin. In his first three years in the league, St. Brown has 315 receptions for 3,588 yards and 21 touchdowns.
