Running back Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers sent his brother Luke McCaffrey a poignant message following his selection in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders with the 100th overall choice.

It was a little earlier than some had anticipated for the wide receiver, as McCaffrey was predicted to be selected in the fourth round going into the draft. However, Christian praised his brother on social media when he was taken by Washington.

“My brother @mccaffrey_luke has my utmost pride. What a tale. At every turn, place a wager on yourself. How intriguing,” Christian commented on X.

It’s an amazing tale, as Christian points out, because Luke originally intended to play quarterback in college. Luke McCaffrey, however, spent his last two years at Rice as a wide receiver after failing to secure a starting position.

In 2022, he finished with 58 receptions and 903 all-purpose yards. To improve his draft stock, he had 992 yards and 12 touchdowns previous season.

Luke McCaffrey, a wide receiver with the Rice Owls, will compete in 2024 for a starting position with the Washington.

Draft analyst Lance Zierlein of NFL.com described the player as a “big slot target who comes from high-end NFL bloodlines and who showed noticeable improvement in his second season at the position.”

“Luke lacks the size of his father, former Pro Bowl receiver Ed McCaffrey, and the explosiveness of his brother, Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey, but he catches with soft hands, great focus and extreme toughness.”

Jayden Daniels, whom Washington selected with the second overall choice in the draft, will also be throwing to Luke McCaffrey.
