Nothing compares to a father’s wisdom, particularly if he is a Pro Football Hall of Famer.

Terique Owens, a former star wide receiver for San Francisco, was signed by the 49ers on Saturday as an undrafted free agent.

His father, Terrell Owens, shared with CBS Sports NFL insider Josina Anderson some advice he gave his son about having the opportunity to prove himself even if he wasn’t selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Terrell said, “I’m proud of him,” to Anderson. “We never asked for anything more than a chance. To get to this point, he has desired to establish his own reputation and follow his own route.

Although we would have preferred to be drafted, he already has a foot in the door. He must now keep up his good work and prove to others that he is a player. He doesn’t have to be me; he can just be himself, as I told him.

“The only difference between him and the other kids who were drafted is that some of them have played football for longer than he has.” Thus, he ought to be inspired. In junior high school, I got started. I wasn’t playing, but I was on the team. Not until my eleventh grade year did I play on the varsity team. He still has a lot of potential and information to acquire.

What Former 49ers' Pro Football Hall of Famer Told His Son After Signing With the Niners

Though he didn’t play until his senior year and didn’t really get going until then, he can sprint quickly and catch. I can’t wait to watch him develop more now.”

Terique attended Contra Costa College in the Bay Area to start his collegiate career. He later transferred to Florida Atlantic University and Missouri State, where he played for three seasons in the NCAA.

The 6-foot-3, 193-pound receiver participated in the 49ers’ local pro day at Levi’s Stadium on April 10 and caught 28 catches for 528 yards and four touchdowns in 2023, averaging 18.9 yards per reception. Given that Terrell spent his first eight NFL seasons with the 49ers in the Bay from 1996 to 2003, it goes without saying that Terique’s last name is already well-known there.
