The Jacksonville Jaguars declared on Tuesday that kicker Joey Slye and wide receiver Zay Jones had been dismissed. Only a few days had passed since the Jaguars selected a kicker and wide receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Jones, 29, caught 34 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns in nine games during the previous year. He sustained hamstring and knee problems that kept him out of eight games.

The seven-year veteran restructured his three-year, $24 million contract with the Jaguars in 2023 after signing it as a free agency in 2022.

In his debut season with the Jaguars, the second-round selection in the 2017 NFL Draft—who had previously played with the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders—totaled a career-high 823 yards and five touchdowns on 82 receptions.

The Jaguars now have $4.1 million in salary cap space with Jones’ departure.

Slye, 28, had the second-worst field goal percentage among kickers who played for the Washington Commanders for 17 games in 2023, making 79.2% (19 of 24) of his attempts.

Of his 35 efforts at extra points, he made 32. Last month, the five-year veteran agreed to a one-year contract with the Jaguars.

During his first 78 NFL games, the former kicker for the Carolina Panthers, Houston Texans, and San Francisco 49ers made 82.3% (121 of 147) of his field goals.

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Jaguars selected former LSU wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. with the 23rd overall choice after completing a deal with the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday. In the sixth round, they subsequently selected Cam Little, a former kicker for Arkansas.

After the 2024 NFL Draft, the Jaguars negotiated to deals with five undrafted free agent wide receivers. In March, they signed former Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis to a $39 million contract.

With a $72 million contract signed in free agency last off-season, Christian Kirk, Davis, and Thomas will be the Jaguars’ primary wide outs going into the season.
