It was reported by ESPN’s Todd Archer on Wednesday, May 1, that Lance’s $22.4 million option for the 2025 season had been declined by the Cowboys.
The action is noteworthy because, following this season, Dallas will have no quarterbacks under contract—Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush are both expected to become free agents.
According to a source who spoke to ESPN, the Dallas Cowboys will not take up quarterback Trey Lance’s fifth-year option. “When the Cowboys acquired Lance in August for a 2024 fourth-round pick from the San Francisco 49ers, that decision was effectively decided.
The option would have cost $22.4 million, been fully guaranteed, and conflicted with the Cowboys’ declared desire to retain Dak Prescott after 2024 had they chosen to exercise it.

The team’s owner, Jerry Jones, praised his rookie quarterback earlier in the summer, stating that the 23-year-old’s future is bright.
