Reports that Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are in negotiations to extend his contract appear to have persisted for the better part of the previous year.

All of this has not resulted in anything. Many people have speculated that Prescott may choose to test NFL free agency in March of next year after seeing out his contract.

The question is clear to Dallas. Is owner Jerry Jones and company of the belief that this squad can win a Super Bowl under the current NFL MVP runner-up? Playoff results under Dak seem to paint a different picture.

The ‘Boys must also consider the quarterback market going forward and see if they can locate a better option than Prescott in the upcoming summer. It seems implausible at this early point in the process. Dallas was mentioned in relation to quarterbacks who could emerge as Prescott’s heir apparent in the 2024 NFL Draft. The group did not make a choice.

Regarding a long-term marriage, everything is still up in the air between Prescott and the Cowboys. On Thursday, he did nothing to allay that.

Dak Prescott confirms no progress on contract talks with the Dallas Cowboys

When asked if the discussions have progressed, Prescott responded, “Not necessarily,” according to The Dallas Morning News. “Clearly, there are still discussions. Knowledge of what Jerry (Jones) stated is accurate; there has been back-and-forth communication.

Without a doubt, communication is essential. However, if these negotiations fail to move further, there will be increasing conjecture that the Prescott-Cowboys marriage may soon come to an end.

Here is Prescott’s April statement in reaction to Jones’ earlier interpretations. Prescott is a longtime Cowboys owner.

“We hope to see more foliage drop. We want to witness more activity. We refer to it as option quarterback. I’ve played option quarterback all of my life. I would want to see more cards dealt.

Jones is not trying to dominate the quarterback market by signing a new contract with Prescott. Instead, he wishes to adapt to the constantly changing market. That complicates matters, for sure.

Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins are two players whose contracts are up for renewal this summer. Starting quarterback Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers is set to become the highest-paid quarterback in league history when he is eligible for his first extension next offseason.

The gist of it is clear. The likelihood that Prescott will leave the Cowboys after the upcoming season rises the longer this goes on.
