The Dallas Cowboys may be getting a skilled veteran wide receiver as they get closer to open practice in May, adding to their offensive potency.

As he navigates his free agency process, Zay Jones, a former second-round selection of the Buffalo Bills in 2017, is spending Wednesday with America’s Team.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, with whom Jones, 29, played for the final two seasons of his NFL career, released him on April 30. The Cowboys are fully aware of this.

This is due to Jones’ three touchdowns and 109 receiving yards in the 2022 OT win over the Cowboys. Undoubtedly, Mike McCarthy, the head coach and offensive play caller for Dallas as of the previous season, was deeply affected by that performance.

McCarthy also wants Jones to play in combination with Brandin Cooks and CeeDee Lamb, a first-team All-Pro wide receiver. This depth chart for wide receivers also includes Ryan Flournoy, an excellent athlete selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Jones and the Cowboys also have a more subtle connection because his father, former linebacker Robert Jones, was selected by Dallas in the first round of the 1992 NFL Draft.

The older Jones helped the Cowboys win three Super Bowls during their dynasty years in the mid-1990s, and he was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team in his debut season.

Zay Jones may or may not wear a Cowboys jersey, but Dallas is very much hoping he does. Only time will tell.

In his NFL career, Jones has accumulated 3,028 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.
