The Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott are still at odds over a contract extension. As he approaches his ninth season and the end of his deal, Prescott may choose to test the open market in the upcoming offseason.

Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins was mentioned by K.D. Drummond of Cowboys Wire as a possible quarterback replacement for the Cowboys.

Drummond wrote on May 8 in an article examining possible Prescott replacements, “A really interesting name in all of this is Tagovailoa, who led the NFL in passing yards in 2023 after leading the league in passer rating (and TD percentage, and yards per attempt, and several other passing categories) in 2022.”

Under the fifth-year option, Tagovailoa is scheduled to play in 2024. The Dolphins have added Odell Beckham to Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and the Raheem Mostert-Devon Achane RB tandem, so he has an incredible supporting cast.

Why then did Miami allow him to leave? Maybe there will be a quarterback switch between the two teams in free agency, as the Dolphins appear to be the ideal destination for Prescott in 2025.

With regard to their quarterbacks, the Dolphins and Cowboys are in comparable circumstances, raising concerns about their prospects at the position.

Negotiations Have Begun in Earnest’ For Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa

Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Miami Dolphins and Tagovailoa have allegedly begun talking about a possible contract.

“I’ve been informed that serious talks have started. At least the Dolphins have started things off,” Fowler stated on a Sports Center program. A team usually makes a counter offer to a player on a contract, and they work their way down to try to hit a sweet spot. The ensuing three months will be very important.

Although the talks have begun, Fowler clarified that the Dolphins are dedicated to closing a deal even though it isn’t “imminent.”

“The Dolphins are pretty committed to this, but my sense is that it hasn’t advanced to something that is imminent.” They appear to be paying him based on their conduct throughout the offseason.

In February, Spotrac projected that Tagovailoa and the Dolphins will agree to a four-year, $220 million deal extension, with $105 million fully guaranteed at signing.

How Tagovailoa Would Help the Dallas Cowboys

Tagovailoa would provide the Dallas Cowboys with a quarterback with stats comparable to Prescott if he were to sign with them in the upcoming offseason.

This season, the 26-year-old product of Alabama topped the league in passing yards with 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. Thirty-year-old Prescott completed his passing for 4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.

The Miami Dolphins and the Cowboys both have elite offensive weapons. Two of the top wide receivers in football, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, are a part of Tagovailoa’s scheme with the Dolphins.

Although Tagovailoa and Prescott both had strong seasons last year, Tagovailoa is four years younger, which may appeal to the Cowboys should they choose not to pay Prescott when Tagovailoa becomes available.

When FanSided’s Kinnu Singh looked into possible Tagovailoa replacements in January, Prescott was the best choice.

Nevertheless, Prescott had one of his best seasons ever in the NFL in 2023. Prescott would be an improvement over Tua for the Dolphins, Singh stated. “He has demonstrated the ability to complete passes down the field to explosive receivers, and he could exploit Miami’s potent offensive playmakers.”

It’s not common to see both teams switch quarterbacks, but in this case, it wouldn’t be the most absurd result.
