The Pittsburgh Steelers added veteran Scotty Miller to their wide receiver group earlier this week. Thanks to a team announcement on X, it is now known that he is being signed to a one-year contract.

He joins the competition alongside Quez Watkins, Van Jefferson, and Calvin Austin III, who should all be vying for a roster place for the rest of the summer given his previous involvement with Arthur Smith with the Atlanta Falcons last season. He is similar to the deep danger speedster Austin brings to the club.

In 17 games played last season, he only had 11 receptions for 161 yards and two touchdowns with Smith in Atlanta; 56 of those yards came on a single play.

In 2020, while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Tom Brady, he had 33 receptions for 501 yards and three touchdowns, which was his most prolific season.

During the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl run, he recorded four receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. He ended up starting two games in the playoffs that season.

He is currently one of the few players that have followed Smith from his previous coaching positions. In the 2019 NFL Draft, the Buccaneers selected him in the sixth round out of Bowling Green State University.

Despite his smaller stature, he spent last season equally between the slot and outside. After viewing a film room featuring Miller and his potential contributions to the squad, Alex Kozora couldn’t help but think about Calvin Austin III.

Even if he increases competition, the Steelers still need a superior outside option to play opposite George Pickens, so they shouldn’t be discouraged from adding more substantial players later in the summer by trade or by making roster cuts.

The Packers also announced the formal signings of QB John Rhys Plumlee, CB Beanie Bishop Jr., RB Daijun Edwards, and LB Jacoby Windmon from their UDFA class, in addition to Miller.

Together with the draft selections and players who are on tryouts, these players will take part in the rookie minicamp starting later today.
