Zay Jones’ future with the Jacksonville Jaguars was never guaranteed; in fact, a lot of people believed the receiver may be included in a deal on draft night.

It was assumed that Jones’s future in Jacksonville was assured when the draft passed and he was still a member of the team. But a few days later, something unexpected occurred. A few days after the NFL Draft ended, on April 30, Jones and kicker Joey Slye were released.

Jones was very close to the end of his $24 million, three-year deal with the Jaguars. The wide receiver collected 116 receptions for 1,144 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in his two seasons with the team.

.. In 2022, the former second-round pick set a career high of 823 yards while leading the Jaguars to the NFL playoffs Divisional Round.

The following season, Jones’ output was restricted due to injuries that kept him out of the game for eight games. Jones only managed 321 receiving yards and two touchdowns as a result. The loss of Calvin Ridley to free agency caused complications for Jacksonville and Jones.

There was never a real No. 1 receiver for the Jaguars, even with the addition of Devin Duvernay and Gabe Davis. Consequently, Jacksonville turned its attention to capturing Trevor Lawrence, who was now their primary target, in the 2024 first round.

Davis, Thomas, and Duvernay, along with Christian Kirk, are the new players in the Jaguars receivers room.

As Jones nears his eighth season in the NFL, the Jaguars are saving $4.18 million and giving up $6.57 in dead cap space. Jones is looking for a new team.
