Though it may not seem like much, it appears that Dak Prescott’s future with the Cowboys is uncertain following the 2024 NFL season.

After this season, the team has no further commitment to him under the terms of his $160 million deal, which is about to expire.

It’s a bit of an odd circumstance. Prescott is scheduled to earn $55 million this season; however, the Cowboys will still be required to pay him a substantial $40 million in dead money in the event that he leaves or is transferred.

Paying that much money for a player who may not even be on the squad is quite high. However, the Cowboys may wish to break with the NFL practice of holding off on making big financial decisions until later, particularly with regard to the quarterback position.

Prescott’s performance in those pivotal games has become a focal point for the squad due to their recent playoff losses.

Despite being one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, he has a 2-5 record and seven interceptions in seven games throughout the playoffs. In light of this, USA Today’s Cowboys Wire is already making assumptions about probable Prescott successors.

Trevor Lawrence of the Jaguars, a former first overall pick, is one name that sticks out.

Cowboys eye Trevor Lawrence as Prescott’s successor

Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence Predicted to Replace Dak Prescott as Cowboys' new QB in 2025

With the Jaguars, Trevor Lawrence, who is also up for a contract extension, hasn’t exactly lived up to the hype. He was clearly talented, as seen by back-to-back seasons with 4,000 yards or more, but he failed to make the predicted leap to the third year that the Jaguars had hoped for.

The squad finished 8-8 last season, and although he played through serious injuries, Lawrence only had 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Lawrence may be considered a short- or long-term quarterback solution, according to Cowboys Wire writer K.D. Drummond: “The third-year starter couldn’t lead Jacksonville to double-digit wins and regressed from his promising rookie season.”

The intriguing element to the current quarterback dilemma is the probable addition of Lawrence to the Cowboys.

As Prescott and Lawrence negotiate their individual contract situations and on-field performances in the upcoming season, this scenario will surely be closely monitored.
