Prior to rookie minicamp, the Pittsburgh Steelers were without a cornerback, and it seems they recognized that need and added space for one.¹

Anthony Averett, a cornerback, was invited to trial for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ rookie minicamp and was signed. In 2023, Averett was not an NFL player.

He last suit up for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, appearing in seven games. He was a member of the Baltimore Ravens from 2018 to 2021, when he intercepted three passes in 2021.

In the trade that sent wide receiver Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers, the Steelers acquired Donte Jackson, but at wide receiver, they were still lacking.

The only other cornerbacks on the roster that could play outside were Cory Trice and Darius Rush.

West Virginia native Beanie Bishop was signed as an undrafted free agent, but his position will be as a slot cornerback.

Averett will give the space some excellent depth. In the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Ravens selected him.
