Cowboys FA Could Sign with Commanders Before 2024 Season
Dan Quinn, the former defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, has already joined the Washington Commanders, but he might not be the only one. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore hasn’t found a new team as June draws near, and the Commanders seem like a good fit. That is, at least, Bryan Manning, a writer for Commanders Wire, perceives it. Manning argues in favor of Washington signing the 33-year-old in an essay published on May 29.
Manning added, “There’s a perfect candidate available who has played for defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. and head coach Dan Quinn.” “Washington to Gilmore makes sense.” The Commanders have inked a number of veterans with ties to the new coaching staff to short-term contracts. Given that Gilmore and Quinn are acquainted, the reasoning makes sense. Nevertheless, it’s not as though they’ve been dating for a long time. Quinn and Gilmore have actually only ever played together once, during the 2023 season. For Cowboys supporters, however, the idea of Washington acquiring Gilmore is not ideal. Last autumn, Gilmore was a dependable and valuable acquisition for Dallas, so it’s difficult to oppose rather than encourage him.
Gilmore has been an exception to the rule that shows in corners don’t usually last ten or more seasons. Even though he is already past his prime, the former Gamecock from South Carolina is still one of the league’s best corners. He won Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 with the New England Patriots, swatting 20 passes overall and snagging six interceptions. He is four years gone from that campaign. However, he has had two or more interceptions in three of the last four seasons, according to Pro Football Reference. In terms of statistics, his season with the Dallas Cowboys was the best since he was at the top with the Patriots. In addition to recording 13 passes defended and two interceptions, Gilmore also added a forced fumble.
Like any NFL player in his mid-30s, Gilmore’s future is a question with every year that goes by. But obtaining his signature wouldn’t be a bad thing if the Cowboys or other teams are just relying on the footage and statistics. Almost every player in the NFL is currently vying for Gilmore. Most teams would benefit from adding him because he is a quality player, but both the player and the suitors must wait. Waiting until a club really needs Gilmore as a starter is probably a better way for Gilmore to get paid more. Given that DaRon Bland has become an every-snap player and Trevor Diggs is recuperating from an ACL tear, it may be the reason the Cowboys haven’t brought him back.
And a reunion with the Carolina Panthers might be in the works if Gilmore gets his way.Panthers defensive end Jadeveon Clowney stated that Gilmore wishes to return to Carolina, as Heavy has reported. “Jadeveon Clowney: ‘I’m going to attempt to persuade him to do the same for Stephon Gilmore.'” Informs him that Gilmore is attempting to persuade the Panthers to sign him back.
