During his one-season stint with the Detroit Lions,Thomas caught 16 catches for 173 yards and one touchdown, all of which were career highs considering how early in his tight end transition he was.

Throughout his four seasons with the Washington Commanders, he reached new heights in his pass-catching career.

49ers Signs Former Detroit Lions Star With 72 Receptions, 670 Receiving Yards, and 6 Touchdowns

After signing with the 49ers, Thomas will play his next football season in the NFC West, where he began his career ten years ago as a quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals.

The 6-foot-6, 250-pound player was selected out of Virginia Tech in the fourth round. As a rookie, he saw action in just two games and finished one for nine for 81 yards and one touchdown while taking two sacks. He has completed his two pass attempts since moving to tight end, totaling 43 yards.

In restricted free agency, the 49ers attempted to sign tight end Brock Wright from Detroit. To Wright’s relief, however, the Lions matched the three-year, $12 million contract at the deadline.

Around these parts, Wright brings a tough, cunning edge to the tight end position, while Sam LaPorta is hoping to improve on his historic breakout season. In addition, James Mitchell and Shane Zylstra, who is back, are contenders for roster places for the Lions, along with Parker Hesse and Sean McKeon.
