The Los Angeles Raiders’ wage cap was significantly increased as of June 1st when Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract was released. It seems unlikely that the squad will make as many moves as anticipated.
The Raiders are concentrated on their current roster, according to Tashan Reed of The Athletic. In a blog published on June 7, Reed stated,
“The Las Vegas Raiders still have significant salary-cap space at their disposal as the end of offseason team activities approaches with mandatory minicamp next week.”
They have the sixth-highest cap space in the NFL, at roughly $34.09 million, according to Over the Cap. The majority of that room was created by the money the Raiders were able to save in March by cutting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with a post-June 1 designation.
“League sources tell The Athletic that the Raiders do not intend to use that extra room to pursue a significant veteran deal. They intend to keep that money in store for 2025 rollover cap space, impending player extensions, and in-season roster flexibility.
Although the Raiders have a lot of salary cap space—$34 million—Redd pointed out that the team’s cap space is only expected to be $24.2 million in 2025, so they might not want to take the chance of lowering that amount by signing more players now.
How About CB? One of the Raiders’ greatest needs going into the offseason was cornerback. The position was left unaddressed by the team in free agency and was not addressed in the draft until the fourth round.
Although Reed’s story suggests the Raiders are happy with their current CB, the team has been linked to some of the best free agent cornerbacks still available. Things might always change now. The Raiders will soon be required to participate in minicamps, when they should see the cornerbacks in their best light to date.
They might take a different approach and attempt to upgrade if they believe they lack sufficient talent for the role. Who Will Be CB’s First? Jack Jones seems to have clinched a starting position at cornerback. After signing in the middle of the season, he had a great season with the Raiders.
He might be among the team’s finest cornerbacks in a while if he can maintain his health. Who will start on the other side of the field is unclear, though. Jakorian Bennett appears to be receiving the majority of first-team reps thus far. Last year, he started the first game but was benched soon after because of his poor play.
The Raiders will give him every opportunity to earn the starting position because he is only beginning his second season and has enormous potential.
With some first-team reps under his belt, Brandon Facyson has a chance to secure the other starting cornerback position. Although it’s unlikely that rookie Decamerion Richardson will challenge for a starting position, he still has a chance to play in his debut season.
