Before the regular season begins, the Dallas Cowboys are expected to make some changes to their quarterback roster.

Trey Lance’s offseason performance and Dak Prescott’s ongoing impasse with the front office could lead to a significant shake-up for the Cowboys.

Dak Prescott is having a good showing at OTAs

Prescott isn’t leaving town without a fight. As was previously discussed on GH, head coach Mike McCarthy stated that Prescott is displaying his best qualities at spring OTAs.

Prescott is under contract with the Cowboys through the 2024 season. After that, the Cowboys must decide whether to pay him or let him walk away in free agency:

As stated on the Cowboys website, McCarthy claimed to be enjoying his finest offseason ever: McCarthy remarked, “I believe Dak is participating in his best offseason program to date.”

“The environment in which the quarterback and receivers have practiced has been excellent. I’m quite pleased with the caliber of work.

The real test will come in training camp, according to McCarthy. “With the quarterback, when the connection is there in the perimeter realm — and that’s been the majority of our physical activity — the connection is better.” “The receivers are playing with more urgency, more reps. The timing is better.”

Is Trey Lance capable of being Prescott’s successor?

The 49ers’ former first-round pick Trey Lance, whom the Cowboys acquired during last year’s preseason, is another option for the Cowboys to consider if Prescott isn’t still with the team in 2025. McCarthy stated last week that he is pleased with Lance’s progress during OTAs.

The youthful quarterback enters a brand-new system. McCarthy remarked, “So you got the learning curve, but now you’re starting to get the timing with the routes.” Trey Lance is on the verge of becoming an expert in the system.

He understands things rather well. He is speaking rather clearly. He appears more at ease every time. He only needs repetitions. Yes, I know I say that every time I bring him up. All he needs is as many reps as possible.

In order to evaluate Lance’s ability to succeed Prescott in 2025, the Cowboys may offer him the QB2 position in the autumn. Cooper Rush would then be the odd man out.

Dallas Cowboys predicted to demote Cooper Rush

Before training camp, Cowboys Wire’s K.D. Drummond projected a 53-man roster. Rush has been demoted to the practice squad in preparation for the next campaign. Rush was signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2017, and he spent years on the active roster serving as a backup.

Before being cut by the New York Giants in September of that season, he was briefly a member of their practice squad in 2020. A few weeks later, Rush would sign with the Cowboys.

Rush isn’t the Cowboys’ best long-term option at the starting position, but he hasn’t been a particularly useful backup either. Lance could get the opportunity to start. The Cowboys must determine what Lance’s ceiling is. Rush may be useful to the Cowboys in 2024, but in a different capacity.
